Old Man on a Rickshaw

words & music by Darryl Cherney

Where the (Am) river Varun-(G) a meets the (F) Assi in the (E) North of Indi-(Am)a (G)(F)(E)

I (Am) made my way down (G) to the ghats where (F) all the groovy (E) people come to (Am) see ya (G)(F)(E)

Then I (Am) made my way to the (G) central part of (F) town to (E) meet some new found (Am) friends (G)(F)(E)

(Am) Playing guitar, (G) playing sitar, (F) til 11 o'(E)clock and then that (Am) story ends (G)(F)(E)

Now the hour was getting late the night was dark and the weather it was hot

I looked out for a rickshaw driver to take me to the Assi Ghat

When I spied an old man on his rickshaw, he was not moving all too fast

He looked so worn and tired I had to wonder how long that he would last

And then I wondered if anyone had ever asked

(Am) Old man on a (G) rickshaw

(F)((E) Tell me what you've (Am) learned (G)(F)(E)

(Am) So many (G) stories (F)(E) none of them dis-(Am) cerned (G)(F)

(Old man)Can you (E) tell me what you've (Am)learned (G)(F)(E)

So I bargained for 5 rupees, that's fifteen American cents

That's a nickel a kilometer in case you're counting pence

So as we drove the three kilometers down to the Assi Ghat

I kept on wanting to switch seats with him put the old man in my spot

He could be my father or my grandfather, who's to say that he is not (Repeat Chorus)

Now we passed the other rickshaw drivers on the avenue sleeping by their carts

Find a concrete ledge on some dimly lit alley and in the morning it all starts again

And I wondered why they slept there and if they had a home

I guess at 15 cents a ride sometimes you sleep alone

You might just sleep alone (Chorus)

So I made the big decision to give him 50 rupees though a hundred would be nice

But I was not going to change the situation any no matter what the price

And so as he dropped me off at my hotel I put the 50 in his hand

At first he looked at it with weakened eyes, and squinted more, he did not understand

Then he looked up at me and smiled as the hustlers moved on in

So I did not stick around to ask what his name was or where he'd ever been

No, no I did not say goodbye to him
